Getting Started:
What Positions are Open?
We seek nominations for president-elect (three-year term) and elected Board members (three-year term). Read the job descriptions for elected Board members and the president-elect.
Am I qualified?
Fellows of the SOA (FSA) who are Continuing Professional Development (CPD) compliant are eligible. Detailed criteria can be found in the job descriptions for the elected Board members and president-elect.
I'm qualified. What’s next?
The nominations process ended March 31, 2019.
What kind of attributes are the Nominating Committee looking for?
The Nominating Committee seeks out diverse perspectives, areas of practice, industries, cultures and backgrounds. The most important characteristic is a nominee’s willingness to engage constructively in the strategic direction of the SOA.
What is the time commitment? Is it possible to work full-time and fulfill the duties of the Board member or president-elect?
Elected Board members typically attend three SOA Board meetings (March, June and October) and an Orientation meeting (November) that are a day and a half each. Preparation for these meetings might take an additional half day. Typically, there are monthly conference calls between the SOA Board meetings. Each elected Board member could have additional assignments that could average one to two hours per week. Most, if not all, are employed full-time.
The president-elect has significant time commitments in addition to those noted for elected Board members though the majority are employed full-time. For more information on typical leadership time commitments, contact Sheree Baker, Director of Governance at sbaker@soa.org.
Is SOA volunteer experience a prerequisite for Board or president-elect service?
There is a certain amount of knowledge that comes from having served on SOA committees, section councils or the SOA Board. Prior volunteer experience (while not a prerequisite) is important; however, it is not the only factor that determines a place on the ballot.
What if I'm nominated but not elected?
With a finite number of seats available, and a highly talented pool of nominees, not everyone will be elected. Many nominees find success at their second (or third) attempt. There are also a myriad of volunteer opportunities within the SOA to develop your leadership skills. You can check these out at www.soa.org/volunteer-program.
Nominations must be received by March 31, 2019. Questions regarding the nominating process may be directed to Sheree Baker, Director of Governance, at sbaker@soa.org or +1-847-706-3565.
