Enrolled Actuaries Examinations (EA–1, EA–2 Segment F, EA–2 Segment L)

The SOA administers multiple–choice examinations on behalf of the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries. The basic EA–1 and the pension EA–2 (Segment L) examinations are administered in the spring of each year. The pension EA–2 (Segment F) examination is administered in the fall.

• The course of reading for the basic EA–1 examination covers mathematics of compound interest, mathematics of life contingencies, and demographic analysis.
• The course of reading for the pension EA–2 examination (Segment F) covers actuarial assumptions, actuarial cost methods, calculation of minimum required contributions, and calculation of maximum deductible contributions.
• The course of reading for the pension EA–2 examination (Segment L) covers ERISA and related laws.

Both Segment F and Segment L of pension EA-2 are required for the SOA Retirement Benefits (U.S. version) specialty track for Fellowship.

Candidates have flexibility with regard to the order requirements are completed. However, the SOA has established a recommended order for each fellowship track. Candidates should be aware that an examination/module may assume familiarity with material that is covered in any requirement that is recommended to come before that examination or module.
